Homeschooling has recently become an increasingly popular subject with the advent of the pandemic that we have all found ourselves facing. All the lockdowns and social distancing have turned us away from classrooms and into our living rooms. Thereby most children experienced homeschooling of some sort last year, and this has given parents a new perspective on what exactly homeschooling entails.
Home education may seem like a foreign concept to some, however, it has always been an incredible option that many parents and children of all ages have had great success with. In the past, educating your children from home was, for many years, the primary way that children were taught.
So, why might some children and parents choose the traditional home education route? And what are the benefits of choosing this? Well, let’s have a look.
The first benefit is actually a downside of the alternative. The public school curriculum is a “one size fits all” system, which does not benefit those that need specialized, individualised, or different academic approaches. It is unrealistic to believe that every child can thrive in an environment such as this. Many children in public school are unmotivated and may see school as a chore, or something they have to do.
Homeschooling allows for freedom of choice, whether it is a parent or private tutor that is educating the child. With many different individualised lesson plans and curriculum to choose from, there is no shortage of options for your child.
Parents may hold certain beliefs that do not coincide with the public school system’s beliefs and teachings. Family values can be made a priority when your child is homeschooled. The average child spends 40 hours a week at public school for roughly 9 months of the year, and a child is influenced heavily in a setting where they spend this amount of time.
Public schools have become significantly less safe overall, whether it be due to violence, peer pressure, bullying, or a lack of security. Home education allows parents to ensure their children’s safety and well-being. Especially now with health safety.
Home education allows children and parents to spend more one-on-one time together, and this has a profound benefit on their relationship, as well as the family’s relationship as a whole. Research has shown that homeschooled children overall have a closer and happier relationship with their family than non-homeschooled children.
Homeschooled children learn greater responsibilities such as time management, independent work, structuring, and accountability. This has a direct impact on their development and maturity. You get to decide which life skills they are taught, and when.
There is flexibility and freedom in your life and your schedule. When homeschooling, you as the parent decide when your child starts school, when a break is taken, and when a lesson ends. It is inconvenient to drop important tasks in order to pick your children up from school, or worrying about missed days at school if they are sick or unable to make it. When there is freedom and flexibility, this often translates to less stress and worry within your child, and in the household overall.
Homeschooling allows children to be directly seen, heard, and appreciated. Teachers in a school setting work very hard, and it is unrealistic that every child in a large classroom will get individual and specific attention regarding their needs. Many children have the innate desire and motivation to learn, but often find that they are simply not receiving the attention and care that they need. Home education can nurture a child’s natural abilities and talents by directly engaging with their specific and tailored needs. You also inevitably know your child much better than any teacher could, no matter how engaged and hands-on the teacher is.
There are many benefits to home education as it allows both the parent and child to thrive, learn, and become the very best versions of themselves.
